The state is suing Debra Reagan, formerly of Sanford, for failing to return Maine Clean Elections Act Funds.

Reagan ran as a Republican candidate for the Maine House of Representatives in 2006, losing to John Tuttle Jr., D-Sanford by 865 votes.

Last month, Reagan had an outstanding balance of $3,390 to the Ethics Commission. She had paid $1,128 in installments, after various attempts to collect the money.

The state served her with a civil suit last week, charging her for Clean Elections Act violations, and orders her to pay back the money, plus any additional fines assessed by the Ethics Commission.

She has since moved to Ontario, Canada, but told the Ethics Commission she would continue to make payments.

“She disclosed to us by telephone that on Feb. 28 she would be visiting a house that she owns in Sanford, Maine for one day, so we had an opportunity to serve her with a civil complaint at that time,” Jonathan Wayne, executive director of the Maine Ethics Commission, said in an e-mail.

She is the only one who has not yet paid back funds from 2006.

The Ethics Commission will also consider whether to refer the issue to the Attorney General for criminal prosecution during an upcoming meeting.
