The following candidates plan to run for the state Senate in 2008.
This list is complete per Ethics Commission and Secretary of State filings, and was last updated Mar. 18. The deadline for Republicans and Democrats to file was Mar. 17.

References to incumbents’ length of service only refer to consecutive terms in office. Election results are according to the Secretary of State’s office.

Senate District 1: Mary Andrews, R-York, will run against incumbent Peter Bowman, R-Kittery. Bowman, who is serving his first term, won 8,563 to 6,958 in 2006.
S.D. 2: Current Rep. Richard Burns, D-Berwick, will run against three-term incumbent Richard Nass, R-Acton. Nass won 7,933 to 6,487 in 2006.
S.D. 3: Robert Stackpole, D-Sanford, will run against incumbent Jonathan Courtney, R-Springvale, who is serving his second term. Courtney won 6,807 to 6,406 in 2006.
S.D. 4: Incumbent Nancy Sullivan, D-Biddeford, will seek a third term, running against Kristi Bryant, R-Kennebunkport. Sullivan won 8,725 to 5,831 in 2006.
S.D. 5: John Cushing, R-Saco, will run against incumbent Barry Hobbins, D-Saco, who is serving his second term. Hobbins won 9,565 to 5,828 in 2006.
S.D. 6: Incumbent Philip Bartlett II, D-Gorham, will seek a third term, running against Peter Davis, R-Gorham. Bartlett won 8,781 to 6,690 in 2006.
S.D. 7: Current Rep. Lawrence Bliss, D-South Portland, will run in a primary Edward Kelleher, D-Scarborough. John Ridge, R-South Portland, is also running. Incumbent Lynn Bromley, D-South Portland, is termed out. Bromley won 9,727 to 6,553 in 2006, with a Green Independent getting 1,353 votes.
S.D. 8: There will be a three-way primary with current Rep. Anne Rand, Justin Alfond and Cliff Ginn, all Portland Democrats. Eric Lusk, R-Portland, and Kevin Gardella, a Green Independent from Portland, are also running. Incumbent Ethan Strimling, D-Portland, is running for Congress. Strimling won 8,824 to 2,433 in 2006, with a Green Independent getting 1,895 votes.
S.D. 9: Incumbent Joseph Brannigan, D-Portland, will seek a second term, running against Nicholas McGee, R-Portland. Brannigan won 10,103 to 4,731 in 2006.
S.D. 10 – OPEN SEAT: Current Rep. Stan Gerzofsky, D-Brunswick, will run against Marybeth Bergquist, a Green Independent from Brunswick, and Donna Thompson, R-Brunswick. Incumbent and Senate President Beth Edmonds, D-Freeport, is termed out. Edmonds won 10,646 to 5,182 in 2006.
S.D. 11 – OPEN SEAT: Gerald Davis, R-Falmouth, will run against Jeanne Hulit, D-Falmouth. Incumbent Karl Turner, R-Cumberland, is termed out. Turner won 10,668 to 8,211 in 2006.
S.D. 12: Incumbent Bill Diamond, D-Windham, will seek a third term, running against Lisa Willey, a Green Independent from South Casco and Thomas Golebiewski, R-Raymond. Diamond won 10,020 to 5,531 in 2006.
S.D. 13: Incumbent David Hastings III, R-Fryeburg, will seek a third term, running against Lisa Villa, D-Harrison. Hastings won 7,687 to 7,058 in 2006, with an independent getting 1,559 votes.
S.D. 14: Incumbent Bruce Bryant, D-Dixfield, will seek a fourth term, running against Glen Holmes, R-Buckfield. Bryant won 10,182 to 5,898 in 2006.
S.D. 15: Current Rep. Deborah Simpson, D-Auburn, will run against second-term incumbent Lois Snowe-Mello, R-Poland. Snowe-Mello won 7,735 to 7,340 in 2006.
S.D. 16 – OPEN SEAT: Current Reps. Margaret Craven, D-Lewiston, Elaine Makas, D-Lewiston, along with Paul Madore, D-Lewiston will face each other in a primary. Corey Nelson Troup, R-Lewiston, is also running. Incumbent Peggy Rotundo, D-Lewiston, is termed out. Rotundo won 8,443 to 3,565 in 2006.
S.D. 17: Incumbent John Nutting, D-Leeds, will seek a third term, running against Russell Pack, R-Turner. Nutting won 8,695 to 6,555 in 2006.
S.D. 18: Ann Woloson, D-Belgrade, will run against incumbent Walter Gooley, R-Farmington, who is serving his first term. Gooley won 9,811 to 7,819 in 2006.
S.D. 19: Incumbent Paula Benoit, R-Phippsburg, will seek a second term, running against Seth Goodall, D-Richmond. Benoit won 9,015 to 8,413 in 2006.
S.D. 20: Current Rep. Peter Rines, D-Wiscasset, will run against David Trahan, R-Waldoboro. Incumbent Dana Dow, R-Waldoboro, has decided not to run. Dow won 10,795 to 7,940 in 2006.
S.D. 21: Sharon Benoit, D-Monmouth, will run in a primary against Brian Rines, D-Gardiner. First-term incumbent Earle McCormick, R-West Gardiner, is seeking reelection, and Stephen Singleton, a Winthrop independent, is also running. McCormick won 8,843 to 8,107 against Rines in 2006.
S.D. 22 – OPEN SEAT: Current Rep. David Miramant, D-Camden, will run against current Rep. Christopher Rector, R-Thomaston. Incumbent Christine Savage, R-Union, is termed out. Savage won 8,845 to 7,995 in 2006.
S.D. 23: Incumbent and Senate Minority Leader Carol Weston, R-Montville, will seek a fourth term against the winner of a primary between Diane Messer, D-Liberty, and Joseph Greenier, D-Stockton Springs. Weston won 9.039 to 7,416 in 2006.
S.D. 24: Incumbent and Senate Majority Leader Elizabeth (Libby) Mitchell, D-Vassalboro, will seek a third term, running against Kimberly Davis, R-Augusta. Mitchell won 9,765 to 5,728 in 2006.
S.D. 25: Incumbent Lisa Marrache, D-Waterville, will seek a second term, running against Wayne Leach, R-Winslow. Marrache won 7,578 to 5,634 in 2006.
S.D. 26: Robert Sezak, D-Fairfield, will run against S. Peter Mills, R-Cornville, who is serving his second term. Mills won 8,879 to 5,173 in 2006.
S.D. 27: Susan Mackey Andrews, D-Dover-Foxcroft, will run against incumbent Douglas Smith, R-Dover-Foxcroft, who is serving his first term. Smith won 8,003 to 6,824 in 2006.
S.D. 28: Mark Remick, R-Trenton, will run against incumbent Dennis Damon, D-Trenton, who is serving his third term. Damon won 11,486 to 6,415 in 2006.
S.D. 29: Dana Kadey, an independent from Princeton, will run against third-term incumbent Kevin Raye, R-Perry and challenger Charles Cameron, D-Addison. Four people ran for the seat in 2006. Raye got 8,328 votes, a Democrat got 2,336, Kadey got 1,856 and another independent got 774.
S.D. 30: Incumbent Elizabeth Schneider, D-Orono, will seek a third term, running against Valerie Carr-Winocour, R-Old Town. In 2006, Schneider got 7,721 votes, her Republican challenger got 3,772 and an independent got 2,028.
S.D. 31: Incumbent and Assistant Minority Leader Richard Rosen, R-Bucksport, will seek a third term, running against Deborah Deane, D-Brewer. Rosen won 9.143 to 6,990 in 2006.
S.D. 32: Tom Sawyer Jr., R-Bangor, will run against incumbent Joseph Perry, D-Bangor, who is serving his second term. Perry won 7,049 to 5,692 in 2006, with an independent getting 296 votes.
S.D. 33: Incumbent Debra Plowman, R-Hampden, will seek a third term, running against Mary Poulin, D-Hampden. Plowman won 9,222 to 6,347 in 2006.
S.D. 34: Incumbent Roger Sherman, R-Houlton, will seek a second term against current Rep. Jacqueline Lundeen, D-Mars Hill. Sherman won 6,878 to 5,768 in 2006.
S.D. 35 – OPEN SEAT: Gary Pelletier, D-Cross Lake, and current Rep. Troy Jackson, D-Fort Kent, will face each other in a primary. Daniel Deveau, R-Cyr Plantation, is also running. Incumbent John Martin, D-Eagle Lake, is termed out. Martin won 8,449 to 4,891 in 2006.
