Beer, dancing, drag queens and bicycles. For the Portland League of Young Voters, it was an ideal way to raise awareness about alternative transportation.

The Portland League of Young Voters held their biannual ReEmergence “DANCEPORTATION ReEvolution” event Thursday night. The event attempts to fuse culture with a political message. Click here for video of the league’s Communications Director Katie Diamond addressing the crowd.

This year, the league has made transportation issues a priority, touting the need for alternative transportation such as bikes, buses and a passenger rail. They fought a proposal to widen I-295 because they believed the state’s resources could be better used elsewhere.

Several First Congressional District candidates, including Chellie Pingree, Adam Cote and Michael Brennan, came. Ethan Strimling also had a table there. Portland legislative candidates also came.

The league’s new state director, Harris Parnell, was also introduced. She starts in two weeks.

It was also a fundraiser for the league. Diamond estimated they would bring in about $3,000 that night.
