Staples to also seek RNC woman position

Former Republican National Committeewoman Jan Staples will run again for her old post.

Staples held one of the state party’s two RNC slots from 1998 to 2004. She served on the RNC’s executive committee and several national convention committees.

Raye is stepping down, and Staples will go against Kathy Watson, a former state party chair, for the position.

RNC members are responsible for advocating for resources from the national committee for the state’s political activities.

“You may understandably be wondering why I would run once more for National Committeewoman after having previously served on the Committee from 1998-2004,” Staples wrote in her announcement to state delegates. “The answer comes down to this:  I am tired of Maine being referred to as a “blue” state, and I am tired of  the high taxes, unaffordable health care and unattractive business climate the Democrats in Augusta have left us with as their sorry legacy.  So, I am renewing my commitment to do whatever I can to elect our Republican candidates to office by running for Maine’s National Committeewoman.”

During her previous terms, Staples said she helped advocate for a new delegate formula which favored small states.

“As a result of that rule change, Maine will  send a delegation to our national convention which is 50% larger than it was prior to 2004 - which in turn means, more grassroots activists from Maine can attend the convention.   I believe that is a record of success which I am confident I would continue if elected to serve once more,” Staples wrote.

Since she left the RNC, Staples said she is concerned about the state party’s ability to execute voter turnout programs.

“My promise to you, should you elect me to serve as Maine’s next National Committeewoman, is twofold,” Staples wrote. “First, I will represent you professionally and effectively in Washington.  Second, and more importantly, I will work with all of you to develop a party organization throughout the state that can deliver the vote for our candidates.  That is how we will win.  And that is how the people of Maine will no longer be singin’ the blues.”
