Rowe slowly prepares for 2010

Attorney General Steven Rowe’s 2010 gubernatorial campaign is slowly coming to life.

Rowe, D-Portland and a former Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives, has confirmed that www.rowe2010.com belongs to him, along with another URL. In addition, he’s drumming up support on Facebook – though his profile doesn’t say what he’s running for yet. He has 75 supporters.

Rowe said he definitely running for governor – but wants to wait until the end of the year, when his Attorney General’s term is up, to start campaigning.

Speculation is wide as to who else may seek the job. State Sen. Dana Dow, R-Waldoboro, announced he is pondering a bid during the February Republican caucuses.

Gov. John Baldacci will be termed out.

While Rowe lines up to be governor, several legislators are lining up to be Attorney General. Rep. Sean Faircloth, D-Bangor, and Rep. John Brautigam, D-Falmouth, have given up their house seats in hopes of winning the post. Rep. Janet Mills, D-Farmington, is running again for her House seat, but also plans to seek the post. Sen. Barry Hobbins, D-Saco, has also expressed interest in the seat.

Constitutional officers are elected by the Legislature, and Rowe is termed out, leaving the seat wide open.
