Progressive group backs Allen, Pingree

[img_assist|nid=1896|title=U.S. Rep. Tom Allen|desc=|link=none|align=right|width=160|height=203]Democracy for America, a progressive political action group, has endorsed U.S. Rep. Tom Allen for Senate, and Chellie Pingree for Congress, both Democrats.

DFA will provide donations from progressives and volunteers for grassroots outreach for both campaigns.

Allen is running against incumbent Susan Collins. This leaves his seat open, and there Pingree is challenging Republican Charlie Summers.

In a release, the group’s communications director Daniel I. Medress said of Allen: “Susan Collins likes to talk a big game, but the truth of the matter is she can’t walk the walk and remains in lockstep with the misguided agenda of George Bush, John McCain, and the Republican Party. Tom Allen is a straight-shooter who doesn’t change his tune based on the latest polling. This is a lesson Susan Collins is incapable of learning.”

Allen has also been endorsed recently by the Maine Council of Senior Citizens and the American Postal Workers Union.

In another release, Arshad Hasan, executive director of DFA, said of Pingree: “Chellie Pingree knows we have to break our dependence on foreign oil, support development of alternative sources of energy, and fix our broken health care system to guarantee we leave our children and grandchildren a better world. Chellie Pingree’s commitment to progressive values shows she is ready to go to Washington and tackle and solve the tough problems.”
