Cummings: Biden already seeking Maine visit

Maine House Speaker Glenn Cummings (D-Portland) said Democratic Vice Presidential nominee Joe Biden is already planning a trip to Maine.

Local supporters are fundraising for the event, which they hope will happen in late September or early October.

“If he hasn’t experienced Maine hospitality before, he’s about to,” Cummings said.

Cummings was one of the first people in Maine to support Barack Obama, endorsing him when he came to Portland in October 2007.

He said Biden will appeal to the American worker, and also has foreign policy experience.

“I think Biden is a rare mix of a politician,” Cummings said. “He has Washington experience but never lived in Washington. He has strong working class roots, and a strong commitment to the working class.”

Biden is unlikely to have an impact on Maine’s electoral vote. “Obama by himself is already doing very well,” Cummings said.

He also reaches Clinton’s supporters because of his appeal to the working class and support within labor groups, Cummings said.
