Video: Sen. Collins' response to Allen's speech, from the Collins campaign
Both the Maine Republican Party and U.S. Sen. Susan Collins (R-Bangor) responded to U.S. Rep. Tom Allen’s (D-Portland) speech at the Democratic National Convention Wednesday.
Allen is challenging Collins for her seat this November.
The party said the Allen campaign exaggerated the significance of the speech noting that it lasted only 1 minute and 48 seconds, and that 7:07 p.m. was “well outside the ‘prime time’.”
Maine GOP chairman Mark Ellis issued the following statement:
"I am surprised Maine Democrats, and Tom Allen's, campaign billed this speech as major. If national Democrats recognized Tom Allen's candidacy as crucial and competitive, it seems they would have given him more time, and a better time slot. Leaders of his own party must view Allen still as a rookie in the minor leagues."
Sen. Susan Collins released a video this evening in response, noting that while Allen is attending his convention, she is travelling the state and will not be at the GOP convention next week.
Collins promoted her bipartisan record.
“We hear a lot in this campaign about the need for change in Washington,” Collins said in the video. “We do need change in Washington, but the change that we need is a less partisan approach to the issues facing our country. I’ve never seen Washington so partisan. It seems like every issue is viewed through a partisan lens. Every vote is cast to score political points. That’s not the way it should be.”
