John McCain’s personality makes him attractive, his son says

MINNEAPOLIS -- John McCain’s son said the way his dad handled the Republican National Convention this week is the same way he will handle the country if he is elected President.

Andy McCain spoke to the Maine and Vermont delegations Tuesday.

The beginning of the RNC was truncated in response to Hurricane Gustav which hit the Gulf Coast this week.

“I think that’s pretty telling and reflective of what dad’s about,” McCain said. “He appraised the situation on the ground and realized the focus of this party and of this country needed to be somewhere else.”

Growing up, his dad was tough on him but kept a sense of humor. In Andy McCain’s brief remarks, he mostly talked about his dad’s personality. “His personal traits are what make him attractive as a candidate and a person,” he said.

John McCain has held a number of town hall meetings across the country where he has taken questions from the audience. “He answers your questions, he looks you in the eye and he tells you the truth. He calls that straight talk,” Andy McCain said.

When someone challenges him about a decision he made, “He will look that person in the eye, and tell them ‘I will never make a decision that doesn’t improve this country’,” Andy McCain said.
