State: Court injunction would double ballot printing costs

A state attorney argued that if an independent U.S. Senate hopeful is successful in her court battle to halt the printing of November’s ballot, it could double the $350,000 price tag in printing them, the Bangor Daily News reported today.

Laurie Dobson was in U.S. District Court Friday. The Secretary of State had denied her a spot on the ballot because she did not submit the required 4,000 signatures.

She claims she had the signatures, submitted them to the municipal clerks by the May 27 deadline, but they did not approve them by the June 2 deadline for her to get them to the state.

In court Friday, she claimed her constitutional rights were violated, the BDN reported.

Assistant Attorney General Phyllis Gardiner argued that the burden to meet the deadline is on candidates, not the clerks, and Dobson should have submitted her petitions earlier.
