League of Young Voters says no to two of three ballot questions

At the bottom of the League of Young Voters’ endorsements, released Tuesday, they also took a stance on both ballot questions.

The Portland group is urging its members to vote no on the beverage tax repeal, and no on the proposed Oxford County casino.

The League claims that without the beverage tax, the Dirigo health insurance program could be threatened, and that the People’s Veto is backed by big corporations. The tax is supported by health care professionals.

“The League believes that health care is a right not a privilege, and that a few pennies to help make Dirigo available to all, is a good idea,” the League states.

The League gave the following pros and cons on the casino issue, but did not endorse its passage.

"Pros: Studies show that a casino would bring revenue and more jobs to Maine. Also, a slot casino already exists in Bangor.

"Cons: Studies also show that casinos lead to increased crime, violence and addiction … and there’s question to whether the jobs that it contributes are low-paying."

The League does support the third ballot question, in support of a $3.4 million bond issue for drinking water programs and wastewater treatment facilities.
