Schumer: Dems ‘closing in’ on Collins

U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) told Washington reporters that 60 Senate seats for the Democrats is in sight, despite earlier skepticism.

Of the Maine Senate race between incumbent Sen. Susan Collins (R-Bangor) and U.S. Rep. Tom Allen (D-Portland), Schumer said the Democrats are ‘closing in’ on Collins.

MSNBC reporter Abby Livingston wrote:

“Although he refused to guess how many seats the Democrats will pick up, his stats and shrugs indicated that the prospect of the Democrats becoming a filibuster proof 60-vote majority is not outside the realm of possibility. He called the chances of such a scenario ‘better than they were two weeks ago’."

Recent polls show the gap between Collins and Allen narrowing from double digits to 8 or 10 points, depending on the poll.
