WALDO COUNTY

H.D. 42 – Safe Republican: Incumbent Michael Thibodeau (R-Winterport) faces a challenge from young Seth Yentes (D-Monroe). While Yentes is reportedly working hard, he is from the wrong town in this Republican district.

H.D. 43 – Leans Republican: Incumbent Jayne Crosby Giles (R-Belfast) squeaked into her first term with a 20-vote victory in 2006. She emerges as the stronger candidate in this race, however, and is favored to pull this one out against Harold Haliday (D-Belfast). The Maine Conservation Voters action fund has spent $833.48 on Giles’ behalf.

H.D. 44 – Leans Republican: The difference between these two candidates’ occupations is stark. Incumbent Robert Walker (R-Lincolnville) is a doctor, and challenger Andrew O’Brien (D-Lincolnville) is a landscaper. However, Walker won by a mere 18 votes in 2006, and the Maine Democratic Party has spent $1,800 on O’Brien’s behalf, and he’s putting up a fight. This will be a close one, but the cards still favor Walker.

H.D. 45 – Safe Democrat: Incumbent John Piotti (D-Unity) is safe in his race against Matthew Evans (R-Palermo). He won his third term by almost 1,000 votes in 2006, and in his time in the Legislature he has become known for his work on tax reform and environmental issues. Piotti’s tougher challenge will happen after Nov. 4 in his bid for majority leader.
