Former U.S. Senate majority leader George Mitchell has been actively campaigning for Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama and U.S. Senate nominee and current Rep. Tom Allen (D-Portland).
Tuesday he campaigned with Allen, who hopes to unseat U.S. Sen. Susan Collins (R-Bangor), and PolitickerME.com had a chance to ask Mitchell about this year's election.
As Democrats in the state have spoken out against recent mailers and robocalls by Republican Presidential candidate John McCain, Mitchell said that the McCain campaign is being run by "the disciples of Karl Rove," the former senior advisor to President Bush who is credited with orchestrating Bush's successful White House runs.
"Anyone who knows Maine knows (Mainers) are negative to negative campaigning," Mitchell said.
On Allen's campaign, Mitchell said that although the Democrat is trailing in the polls, he believes Allen can pull it off.
"It's always tough when you're up against an incumbent," Mitchell said. "But people want change, 80 percent believe that the country is not on the right track."
Despite his efforts on behalf of Obama this year, Mitchell said he would not be interested in a job in an Obama administration.
"I have a full time job," he said. "And I've already retired three times."
