Democrats to maintain Senate majority

The Democrats will maintain their majority in the state Senate, and possibly strengthen their numbers.

With 79 percent of the vote counted, the worst case scenario for them is that they will maintain 18 seats in the 35-seat body, according to preliminary numbers.

Five seats remain too close to call, all of which are current Republican seats.

  • Senate District 2: Sen. Richard Nass (R-Acton) v. Richard Burns (D-Berwick)
  • S.D. 3: Sen. Jon Courtney (R-Sanford) v. Robert Stackpole (D-Sanford)
  • S.D. 18: Sen. Walter Gooley (R-Farmington) v. Ann Woloson (D-Belgrade)
  • S.D. 19: Sen. Paula Benoit (R-Phippsburg) v. Seth Goodall (D-Richmond)
  • S.D. 20 – Open seat: David Trahan (R-Waldoboro) v. Peter Rines (D-Wiscasset)

In addition, sources say there could be a recount in Senate District 15, where Deborah Simpson (D-Auburn) beat incumbent Lois Snowe-Mello (R-Poland) by just over 100 votes.

If none of the above races come out in the Democrats’ favor, they will be left with 18 seats – enough to keep the majority.
