Summers concedes in ME-1 race

PORTLAND -- Charlie Summers (R-Scarborough) has conceded in his race for the 1st Congressional District against Chellie Pingree (D-North Haven).

Last night he said he was waiting to make the call until his hometown of Scarborough came in. He called a news conference at his campaign office this morning to make the call.

“I wish Chellie the best, and I stand by ready to help,” Summers said. “We will stand together as Americans to support Barack Obama.”

He said the race would have been much closer had this not been a presidential year. According to preliminary results, Pingree won 55 to 44 percent.

He initially said he was ruling out running for office. Later, when asked about running for U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe’s seat in the event that she accepted a cabinet position, he said: “You never know where life will take you.”
