Dems pick up two seats in state Senate

The next state Senate will likely stand at 20-15 with the Democrats in the majority, according to preliminary results.

Democrats managed to unseat two Republicans. Deborah Simpson (D-Auburn) beat Sen. Lois Snowe-Mello (R-Poland), and Seth Goodall (D-Richmond) beat Sen. Paula Benoit (R-Phippsburg).

Sources say there will likely be recounts in both races.

In addition the Democrats held strong in the 18 seats they currently hold.

The one seat they hoped for, but were unable to claim, was Senate District 22. Incumbent Christine Savage (R-Union) was termed out, and Chris Rector (R-Thomaston) beat David Miramant (D-Camden). Both are current representatives.

Sens. Richard Nass (R-Acton), Walter Gooley (R-Farmington) and Jon Courtney (R-Sanford) had nail-biter races but prevailed.
