[UPDATED] After recount, Nass still the victor in S.D. 2

AUGUSTA – Sen. Richard Nass (R-Acton) will keep his seat following a recount for his re-election bid against Richard Burns (D-Berwick).

Tuesday’s results had Nass up by 385 votes, with a vote count of 10,707 to 10,322. The recount gave a final tally of 10,786 to 10,352, a difference of 434 votes.

This meant that there were 109 more ballots counted in the recount. Billings said this was probably a tally sheet error by the towns.

In recounts, a representative from both the Republican and Democratic parties, along with an official from the Secretary of State’s office, work in a team and examine each of the ballots. Those they cannot agree on are set aside.

If those disputes exceed the number of votes the incumbent won by, the case will next go before the Senate.

Billings and Ben Grant, attorney for Burns, resolved all disputed ballots.
