General store sign takes bets on Obama

A Standish general store reportedly had a sign up soliciting bets on when president-elect Barack Obama would be assassinated, the Associated Press reported.

An AP writer reported seeing the sign, and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department reported hearing a complaint.

Although the owner of the store has taken the sign down and denies it ever existed, the matter has been reported to the Secret Service.

It has also caught the attention of state lawmakers. State Sen. Bill Diamond (D-Windham) has submitted a resolve to the Legislation stating that the people of Maine reject racism and threats of violence.

Representative-elect Mike Shaw (D-Standish) and Rep. John Robinson (R-Raymond) are cosponsoring the resolve.

Diamond said in a release: “After working in public service for several decades, I know the people of Standish and Maine very well. Whether they are Democrat or Republican, supported McCain or Obama in this last election, they respect the fact that Barack Obama will be our first African-American president and are ready for his leadership.”
