Foster Daily Democrat has a story on Maine's "election year firsts."
Chellie Pingree is the first DEMOCRATIC woman ever elected to either the US House or US Senate from Maine, just 68 short years after Mainers elected republican Margaret Chase Smith to the US House. Smith also served in the US Senate. She was the first woman to serve in both Houses. Olympia Snowe was first elected in 1978, the youngest republican woman at age 31. Also, Senator Snowe is the only member of Congress to serve in both houses at the State level and in Congress.
According to the story, Pingree's victory also means that Maine is the first state to have women as a majority of its congressional delegation. Pingree will join Senators Snowe and Collins, meaning Congressman Michaud will be the lone male from Maine.
The Foster's story also notes that as of last month, women held 88 seats in Congress - 63 are Democrats and 25 Republicans. There are 72 women serving in the House and 16 in the Senate.
