GOP waiting on Dem AG nomination

As the Democrats in the Legislature make their nominations for constitutional officers, the Republicans are on standby.

The state treasurer, auditor and secretary of state will likely be appointed without competition.

There are three Democratic candidates for Attorney General – state Reps. Janet Mills (D-Farmington), John Brautigam (D-Falmouth) and Sean Faircloth (D-Bangor).

A Republican lawmaker said that the caucus is not putting up a nominee of their own, as they do not hav the numbers. The caucus is waiting, however, for the results of the Democratic nomination.

A MPBN story last week suggested that Republican leadership was questioning Faircloth’s credentials, and that if the Democrats chose him, they would back one of his opponents.

When asked about this earlier today, Mills simply said that she wouldn’t need the Republicans backing because she would win the Democratic nomination.

The Democrats are on the final speech of the nominating process.
