Brautigam: U.S. Attorney job an option

Outgoing state Rep. John Brautigam (D-Falmouth) said on Tuesday he is considering his option following a loss in his bid for Attorney General.

Brautigam lost the three-way race to Rep. Janet Mills (D-Farmington). Rep. Sean Faircloth (D-Bangor) also ran.

U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud (D-East Millinocket) is in charge of making recommendations to President-elect Barack Obama for local appointments, which include the U.S. Attorney and U.S. Marshall positions. U.S. Rep.-elect Chellie Pingree (D-North Haven) and Gov. John Baldacci (D-Bangor) will assist with the process.

Several sources said that the two who didn’t win the Attorney General post would be top contenders for the U.S. Attorney job. Faircloth has since said he is not interested in the position.

“I will be looking at a couple different possibilities,” Brautigam said. “That’s one of them.” Brautigam gave up his state House seat to focus on his bid for AG.

Another possibility for U.S. Attorney is state Sen. Barry Hobbins. Hobbins was one of the finalists for the post under the Clinton administration, losing to Jay McCloskey. On Tuesday, he said he would take the job if it was offered to him; however he believed there were more qualified candidates.
