Brennen waits it out before conceding and finishing third

SOUTH PORTLAND -- Despite trailing badly all night as the election returns came in, former state Senate Majority Michael Brennan waited most of the night before finally conceding it would not be his night.

His campaign spokesman Peter Asen said they "wanted to wait for a clear winner to emerge. He finished third behind Adam Cote and Chellie Pingree.

In team effort, Summers wins congressional nomination again

UPDATED: SOUTH PORTLAND - For the second time, Charlie Summers will by the Republican Party's nominee in the 1st Congressional District.

A former state senator and one time staffer to U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, Summers defeated Dean Scontras by nearly 18 points by the time he claimed victory. He will now face Democrat Chellie Pingree in November.

In ME-1 race, Summers is 'cautiously optimistic'

SOUTH PORTLAND -- A small group of about 75 supporters of Republican congressional candidate Charlie Summer eagerly awaited his arrival hoping for a victory party here at the Thomas Room banquet hall.

Moments before Summers walked into the room, they waved campaign signs and shouted "Charlie, Charlie."It might have been a small group at this conference room, but their level of support was heard loud and clear.

'Dead day' for voter turnout in Summers's hometown

SCARBOROUGH -- At the state's largest polling station and Charlie Summers's hometown, the election warden, called today's voting participation "a dead day".

At 5:30 p.m. today about 1,300 voters. They had predicted to see some 2,000 voters but the total might reach 3,000 said Tody Justice, town clerk. There are 13,561 registered voters in Scarborough in a city of about 18,000.
