Casino push failing by 7 points with 77 percent reporting

An effort to allow a casino in Oxford County is losing by 40,000 votes with 77 percent of precincts reporting, according to preliminary results compiled by the Bangor Daily News.

Dennis Bailey, head of the opposition group CasinosNO!, is considering this a victory. He hopes this will be the definitive vote on casinos in the state. “Maine people made up their mind five years ago. Las Vegas didn’t get the memo,” he said.

Political ads get aggressive in final days

There are a number of new ads out in the days before the election. Many of them go on the offense, and aren’t available online.

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins (R-Bangor) has a new ad out hitting back at her opponent, U.S. Rep. Tom Allen (D-Portland).

Allen has been airing ads criticizing Collins for voting for the Bush tax cuts and the 2005 energy bill.

Fed Up with Taxes campaigns to save Maine businesses, but spends its money out of state

Fed Up with Taxes, the group behind the proposed people's veto of the beer, wine and soda tax, has made protecting Maine businesses a key theme in its campaign this fall.

However, a review of the political action committee's finance reports show that it has spent a small proportion of its budget on campaign services from Maine businesses.

The group is backing Question 1, which would repeal the taxes created at the end of this year's legislative session to fund Dirigo, the state's health insurance program.

CasinosNO! advertises on conservative forum

Battling thousands of dollars in advertising from their opponent, CasinosNO! will start advertising on conservative Web site As Maine Goes.

CasinosNO!, an organization led by Democratic activist Dennis Bailey, is working against Question 2, which would establish a casino in Oxford County if approved.

Vote Yes on 2 for Maine put six times more money into its campaign in the last two weeks of the 3rd quarter than opponents CasinosNO! received all year.

The two groups are on either side of Question 2, which proposes a casino in Oxford County.

Question 2: Ski resorts vs. casino

Three Western Maine ski resorts announced their opposition to Question 2 today, which upon approval would allow a casino in Oxford County.

Dana Bullen, general manager of Sunday River in Newry, said he would be donating money to CasinosNO!, the group opposing the ballot question.

Saddleback Mountain and Sugarloaf executives also oppose the project, Bullen said in a release.

Making the rounds in the blogosphere this weekend is a YouTube ad from CasinosNO! warning against the proposed Oxford County Casino.
