Pingree: Delegation looking to Mitchell for appointment advice

With President-elect Barack Obama taking office, there will be a number of local appointments to make, such as U.S. Attorney, U.S. Marshall, Small Business Administration director and Environmental Protection Agency director.

U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud (D-East Millinocket) is in charge of making these appointments, along with Gov. John Baldacci (D-Bangor) and Congresswoman-elect Chellie Pingree (D-North Haven).

Cummings interested in Obama administration job

AUGUSTA -- Outgoing House Speaker Glenn Cummings (D-Portland) said he is
interested in holding a position under President-elect Barack Obama's administration.

Cummings said he is confident that he will be offered a position, but doesn't know if it will be the one he wants. He would not say which one he was jockeying for.

U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud (D-East Millinocket), the senior Democrat in the delegation, will be collecting resumes for local appointments, including U.S. attorney and U.S. marshall.

Question 1 debate Sunday

Newell Augur, chairman of Fed Up with Taxes, and outgoing Maine House speaker Glenn Cummings (D-Portland) will debate both sides of Question 1, which asks voters to repeal the recently passed beer, wine and soda taxes to support the Dirigo health care program.

Fed Up with Taxes is the group behind the people’s veto.

The debate will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday in Room 1 of Payson Smith Hall at the University of Southern Maine in Portland.

Cummings: Biden already seeking Maine visit

Maine House Speaker Glenn Cummings (D-Portland) said Democratic Vice Presidential nominee Joe Biden is already planning a trip to Maine.

Local supporters are fundraising for the event, which they hope will happen in late September or early October.

“If he hasn’t experienced Maine hospitality before, he’s about to,” Cummings said.

Cummings was one of the first people in Maine to support Barack Obama, endorsing him when he came to Portland in October 2007.

McCain arrives in Maine

John McCain landed in Portland last night for his visit today. Channel 8 has video of his arrival.

McCain will attend several fundraisers in Kennebunkport, including a $2,300 per ticket event at the Bush compound.

Then he will visit the Maine Military Museum for a public event at 2:30 p.m. Doors open at 12:30.
