Political ads get aggressive in final days

There are a number of new ads out in the days before the election. Many of them go on the offense, and aren’t available online.

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins (R-Bangor) has a new ad out hitting back at her opponent, U.S. Rep. Tom Allen (D-Portland).

Allen has been airing ads criticizing Collins for voting for the Bush tax cuts and the 2005 energy bill.

Fed Up with Taxes campaigns to save Maine businesses, but spends its money out of state

Fed Up with Taxes, the group behind the proposed people's veto of the beer, wine and soda tax, has made protecting Maine businesses a key theme in its campaign this fall.

However, a review of the political action committee's finance reports show that it has spent a small proportion of its budget on campaign services from Maine businesses.

The group is backing Question 1, which would repeal the taxes created at the end of this year's legislative session to fund Dirigo, the state's health insurance program.

On People's Veto, both sides sharpen knives and prepare for brawl

After the Fed Up With Taxes coalition submitted 90,000 signatures to the Secretary of State's office, likely putting a People's Veto for beer and wine taxes on the November ballot, House Minority Leader Josh Tardy is predicting a "bruising battle" leading up to Election Day.
The coalition is fighting the recently passed taxes on beer, wine, and soda to support Dirigo Health. The bill also adds a 1.8 percent surcharge on hospital bills and doctor's fees, according to a release from Tardy's office.

Health Coverage for Maine launches campaign

A new coalition called Health Coverage for Maine launched their effort to oppose the people’s veto of the new taxes on beer, wine and soda.

The veto effort is orchestrated by Fed Up with Taxes, a coalition of business groups. They need to collect 55,000 signatures to repeal the law passed by the Legislature.

The Legislature approved the new taxes to fund Dirigo, the state’s health insurance program.
