Declared write-in candidates on the Maine ballot

There are a handful of declared write-in candidates for next Tuesday’s election, according to the Secretary of State’s office.

President:

  • Chuck Baldwin of Pensacola, Fla. and Darrell L. Castle of Germantown, Tenn. are running as members of the Constitution Party.

Hoffman says he should be allowed in the debates

PORTLAND -- Herb Hoffman, an independent write-in candidate for U.S. Senate, said he has been denied participation in all 10 U.S. Senate debates between incumbent Sen. Susan Collins (R-Bangor) and challenger U.S. Rep. Tom Allen (D-Portland).

Hoffman said he is not allowed to participate because he did not qualify for the ballot. He originally qualified, but then the Maine Democratic Party successfully challenged his candidacy in court.

Hoffman: Bailout bill was ‘ill-conceived’

Herb Hoffman, an independent who is running as a write-in for U.S. Senate, said he was pleased that members of Congress listened to their constituents and rejected the Wall Street bailout plan, calling it “ill-conceived.”

Judge: There is ‘no constitutional right to procrastination’

A federal judge has denied a request by independent U.S. Senate hopeful Laurie Dobson to halt the printing of November’s ballots, the Portland Press Herald is reporting.

Dobson claimed she was unfairly kept off the ballot because municipal clerks didn’t get her signatures approved by the Secretary of State’s deadline.

Hoffman launches write-in campaign

Targeting “disaffected Democrats and disgruntled Republicans”, Herb Hoffman said he is launching a write-in campaign for the U.S. Senate.

Hoffman was initially on the ballot before the Maine Democratic Party successfully challenged his candidacy. He claims that the party along with the Secretary of State and the court systems “collectively conspired to remove my name” from the ballot.

Bright skips convention, stays home to farm

DENVER -- There was one delegate who didn’t come to Denver.

David Bright, a delegate for Barack Obama from Dixmont, said that with all the rain Maine has been hit with, he had to stay home to take care of his farm.

He said he is working on a number of construction projects that need to get done, and they affect the long-term productivity of his business.

State Court issues one-week stay for Hoffman

The Maine Supreme Court granted Herb Hoffman a one-week stay on a recent decision that, when enacted, will take him off the ballot as an independent running for the U.S. Senate.

The decision was announced yesterday, the same day U.S. Supreme Court Justice David Souter denied an application to order the state’s high court for the stay.
