Rep. Pingree on budget priorities: prepared testimony

Rep. Chellie Pingree will be laying out her priorities regarding the administration's budget for FY2010 today at a hearing before the House Committee on the Budget. Below the fold find her prepared testimony.

I want to thank Rep. Pingree for promoting two ideas that I consider paramount to Maine's and our nation's future - providing access to basic, affordable health care to every American, and developing alternative energy generation to fossil fuels.

Testimony of Congresswoman Chellie Pingree

McClatchy: 5 largest U.S. banks may lose $587 billion

Our youngest is three, and we have learned from his older brother and sister that you don't stop asking questions with his first answer, but keep asking until his answers agree, more or less, with the evidence at hand.

Have any of the people trying to get to the bottom of the Big Shitpile reared their own children, or was that done by the nannies they hired and forgot to pay taxes on? Because what I've been watching since last summer is very much like watching a parent that doesn't have a clue how to deal with a three year old.

Except, of course, my three year old isn't going to bankrupt the world.

Obama: "...by August 31, 2010, our combat mission in Iraq will end."

From the prepared text that President Barack Obama delivered this morning at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina:
What we will not do is let the pursuit of the perfect stand in the way of achievable goals. We cannot rid Iraq of all who oppose America or sympathize with our adversaries. We cannot police Iraq's streets until they are completely safe, nor stay until Iraq's union is perfected. We cannot sustain indefinitely a commitment that has put a strain on our military, and will cost the American people nearly a trillion dollars. America's men and women in uniform have fought block by block, province by province, year after year, to give the Iraqis this chance to choose a better future.

Greenwald: Afghanistan + More Troops = Catastrophe

Robert Greenwald and Brave New Films has produced this new film, Afghanistan + More Troops = Catastrophe:

There is more at Rethink Afghanistan:

President Obama has committed 17,000 more troops to Afghanistan. This decision raises serious questions about troops, costs, overall mission, and exit strategy. Historically, it has been Congress' duty to ask questions in the form of oversight hearings that challenge policymakers, examine military spending, and educate the public. After witnessing the absence of oversight regarding the Iraq war, we must insist Congress hold hearings on Afghanistan.

Maine delegation lauds president’s ambitious goals

WASHINGTON — During a speech in which Republican senators often remained seated while Democrats applauded, Maine Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe stood up when President Obama referred to the passage of a $787 billion stimulus package. They and Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Penn., were the only GOP senators to vote for the bill when it passed the Senate.

After the president’s speech Tuesday night, Snowe released a statement lauding Obama’s “aggressive and ambitious agenda,” saying bipartisan cooperation will prove even more important now given the challenges facing the nation.

Snowe singled out Obama’s plan to reform the American health care system, the details of which the president said he would outline as soon as next week, as a good idea to address a “mounting crisis” affecting more than 47 million uninsured Americans.

Prepared text of President Obama's speech to the Joint Session of Congress

Here is the complete prepared text of President Obama's speech to the Joint Session of Congress (my thanks to Jesse Lee of the White House staff):
Madame Speaker, Mr. Vice President, Members of Congress, and the First Lady of the United States:

I've come here tonight not only to address the distinguished men and women in this great chamber, but to speak frankly and directly to the men and women who sent us here.

I know that for many Americans watching right now, the state of our economy is a concern that rises above all others.  And rightly so.  If you haven't been personally affected by this recession, you probably know someone who has - a friend; a neighbor; a member of your family.

More of Rep. Pingree on her recent visit to Iraq and Afghanistan

Speaking with Kim Block of WGME-TV on 20 February, Rep. Chellie Pingree had this to say (amongst other things);

For me, it was clear that we could start moving some troops out of Iraq and that we have some serious challenges in Afghanistan.

I am still worried about moving into Afghanistan at increased troop levels because I don't want to see us in the same situation we were in in Iraq, without a clear goal, without putting enough people in there who are actually helping to rebuild a civil society, and also some of the things that go along with military force.

Center for Arms Control: How to withdraw from Iraq

The Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation today issued this paper on how President Obama can withdraw our troops from Iraq by December 2011, with most withdrawn by July 2010:
This paper outlines how the President can responsibly execute his policy of removing U.S. combat forces from Iraq within 16 months. It proposes a workable U.S. redeployment schedule that would result in 100,000 total U.S. troops remaining in Iraq by the end of 2009; 35,000 to 65,000 support troops remaining in Iraq by July 2010, when the President's 16-month timetable would end if it is initiated in April 2009; and less than 1,000 troops remaining by December 2011, when the U.
