Child porn stats shock lawmakers

AUGUSTA, Maine — Rep. Emily Cain, D-Orono, the co-chair of the Appropriations Committee, said she had trouble sleeping the night after hearing that the amount of child pornography being downloaded from the Internet in Maine has increased 208 percent in one year.

“The impact of that presentation was incredibly strong on our committee,” she said. “It is very scary, particularly because it affects the lives of children.”

State police Sgt. Glenn Lang, supervisor of the State Police Computer Crimes Unit, told lawmakers the number of times a video or pornographic picture of children is downloaded to a computer in Maine went from 14,951 times in 2007 to 43,530 times in 2008.

General store sign takes bets on Obama

A Standish general store reportedly had a sign up soliciting bets on when president-elect Barack Obama would be assassinated, the Associated Press reported.

An AP writer reported seeing the sign, and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department reported hearing a complaint.

Although the owner of the store has taken the sign down and denies it ever existed, the matter has been reported to the Secret Service.

Rep. John Robinson (R-Raymond) ran for assistant minority leader in the House against Phil Curtis (R-Madison) and Stacey Fitts (R-Pittsfield), with Curtis prevailing.

House to elect leaders Thursday
