Senate Republicans replace leadership

AUGUSTA -- In an unexpected move, the Senate Republicans replaced their leaders this afternoon.

Sen. Kevin Raye (R-Perry) defeated current Republican leader Carol Weston (R-Montville).

After several were nominated, Sen. Jon Courtney (R-Sanford) was elected assistant leader unopposed.

The Republican caucus was held off-site and was closed to the press. Nobody asked would reveal what the vote was.

Democrats to maintain Senate majority

The Democrats will maintain their majority in the state Senate, and possibly strengthen their numbers.

With 79 percent of the vote counted, the worst case scenario for them is that they will maintain 18 seats in the 35-seat body, according to preliminary numbers.

Five seats remain too close to call, all of which are current Republican seats.

The dollar figure represents the total amount spent on behalf of the candidate mentioned combined with the funds spent in opposition to his or her opponent.

If the candidate’s opposition is running under the Clean Elections Act, then he or she is entitled to matching funds.
