Jonathan Kaplan, our recent correspondent from The Mall during the inauguration, has taken a position "doing press stuff" for Rep. Ellen Tauscher (CA-10), FishbowlDC reports:

Kaplan served as a senior staff writer at The Hill until December 2007 when he left for a spot at the Portland Press Herald-Maine Sunday Telegram. Six months later, on July 1, the newspaper closed the DC bureau. Kaplan shared his story in a WaPo article this summer.

Talk about an inside blog - one dedicated to the media in our nation's capitol.

Kaplan joins Washington Independent

Former Portland Press Herald reporter Jonathan Kaplan is now working for the Washington Independent, Media Bistro reported today.

Kaplan: Fewer reporters means incumbent advantage

Former Portland Press Herald Reporter Jonathan Kaplan has an interesting column in The Washington Post this morning about the dwindling press corps in Washington. 

Kaplan was laid off from the Press Herald in a recent round of layoffs that resulted in the closure of the paper’s Washington D.C. and Augusta bureaus.

Press Herald to lose three political reporters

The Portland Press Herald will be losing three of its seasoned political reporters, reports Al Diamon who writes the Media Mutt blog for Downeast magazine. Diamon cited anonymous sources with the paper.

State House reporter Paul Carrier and political reporter Kevin Wack are two of six reporters who have accepted a buyout from the paper. In addition, Washington, D.C. reporter Jonathan Kaplan has been laid off.

Experienced D.C. reporter to cover Maine politics

Blethen Maine Newspapers has hired experienced Washington, D.C. reporter Jonathan Kaplan to cover national politics for the 2008 election.

Kaplan has spent five years writing for The Hill, a Capitol Hill publication, where he has covered Congress, business and lobbying and political campaigns. He has also made reporting trips to Iraq and Venezuela.
