Dems withdraw complaint against GOP

The Maine Democratic Party has withdrawn its complaint against the Maine Republican Party regarding an independent expenditure made on behalf of their executive director, Julie O’Brien, who is running for the Maine House.

They brought the complaint before the Ethics Commission earlier this week, alleging a conflict of interest.

The commission meeting that had been scheduled for Friday morning to hear the matter has been cancelled.

Four House candidates in Maine delegation

MINNEAPOLIS -- Julie O’Brien, executive director of the Maine Republican Party, hopes to return the Maine House where she previously served from 1996 to 2004.

O’Brien (R-Augusta) said she decided to run when incumbent Rep. Kim Silsby (D-Augusta) decided to drop out of the race. O’Brien faces Anna Blodgett (D-Augusta).

She said she is running because she wants to improve accountability in government by examining which programs work and which ones don’t – and trimming the fat.

Maine GOP women: Palin’s 'one of us'

MINNEAPOLIS – Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin has five children. Julie O’Brien, executive director for the Maine Republican Party, also has five children.

Wednesday night, when the Alaska governor spoke, O’Brien said she felt a real connection.

Maine GOP hopes to recoup 2006 losses

MINNEAPOLIS -- 2006 wasn’t a good year for Republicans. This year the Maine Republicans hope to redeem themselves.

Maine’s Republican National Committeeman Rick Bennett said the party is undergoing a transition, but hopes the John McCain-Sarah Palin presidential ticket will represent a reformist agenda. With them on the top of the ticket, combined with Sen. Susan Collins (R-Bangor), who is running for reelection, he hopes to see an effect on the down-ballot races.

Police remove Dobson from GOP convention

Laurie Dobson, an independent candidate for the U.S. Senate, was removed from the Maine GOP Convention by the Augusta Police Department earlier today.

Julie O’Brien, executive director of the party, said Dobson came into the convention to protest the war during Sen. Susan Collins’ speech. She wanted onto the floor – where non-delegates are not allowed to be.

After causing more commotion, sources said, she was asked to leave. When she wouldn’t leave, she was escorted out by police.

Romney to headline GOP convention; Democrats contemplate hosting two keynotes

Maine Republican caucus winner Mitt Romney will headline the state GOP convention May 2 and 3.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, has since dropped out of the presidential race and is now stumping for presumptive Republican nominee John McCain.

The Maine Republican caucus was a non-binding contest. Delegates elected at municipal caucuses are free to support whomever they choose at the state convention, where the national delegates will be selected.
