May Day health care reform events

This May Day hundreds of Mainers will visit Senators Snowe and Collins' offices in Biddeford, Portland, Auburn, Lewiston, Augusta, Bangor, and Presque Isle to highlight the urgent need for federal reform that creates access to quality, affordable health care for all. A "Health Care Caravan" of twenty-five activists will travel to each office, meeting up with many more local residents in each city. At each office, community members will present the Senators with a lighthouse, share a personal story related to the health care crisis, and request that the Senator be a "guiding light" out of the health care crisis by supporting a public health insurance plan at the national level for everyone in America.

Maine DHHS to get $19.5M for water infrastructure projects

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Maine’s Department of Health and Human Services will receive $19.5 million under the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Water State Revolving Fund Program.

Sen. Olympia Snowe announced the funding this week as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Snowe and fellow Republican Sen. Susan Collins were two of only three GOP senators who issued the passage of the bill.

Snowe emphasized the need for water infrastructure in a letter to the Senate Appropriations Committee on Dec. 22 stating that the projects could “quickly return benefits to local communities and their residents, employ workers in the ailing construction industry, help keep property taxes down, and make positive long-term in-vestments for communities’ continued growth and sustainability.

Low Power FM: Bill would make it easier for community radio stations

Printed with permission by Joe Steinberger, founder of WRFR-FM and The Free Press. This first appeared in their 4 March issue - my thanks to them.

On 24 February 2009, Rep. Michale Doyle (PA-14) introduced the Local Community Radio Act of 2009 (H.R. 1147) that would make it easier for residents of small communities to start there own low=power FM stations. -- GW

Rockland's local radio station, WRFR-LP at 93.3 FM, is seven years old this month. The LP stands for low power. WRFR broadcasts at just 100 watts, compared to the 10,000 watts and more that high-power stations radiate.

The idea to allow low-power stations like WRFR to exist was conceived by the Federal Communications Commission as a small antidote to the growing concentration of radio station ownership in the hands of a few large corporations.

Ever wonder what sort of tax breaks Wal-Mart gets?

You ever wonder what sort of tax break(s) Wal-Mart receives as municipalities compete to have these town-killer big-box stores locate in their town? Well, check out Wal-Mart Subsidy Watch.

Pick a location from the pop-down menu at the right, or simply click on a state in the map for a report. For example, in Maine:

There are no centralized databases of economic development subsidies, but Good Jobs First found 3 deals worth a total of about $22.2 million in Maine. They include the following:

Good Jobs First has compiled data on Wal-Mart subsidies in the following cities
Augusta, ME : $5.7 million
Lewiston, ME : $16 million
Waterville, ME : $500,000

Hidden taxpayer costs
Many Wal-Mart workers are ineligible for health coverage from their employer or choose not to purchase what is available, because it is too expensive or too limited in scope.

Bill targets ‘energy drink’ sales to minors

AUGUSTA, Maine — The sale of high-caffeine “energy drinks” to minors could be outlawed if a proposal under consideration this week by Maine lawmakers is approved. The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Peggy Pendleton, D-Scarborough, says consuming the sodalike drinks can cause health problems in young people, but a spokesman for the Maine Beverage Association argued that an age limit is unnecessary and unenforceable.

Other bills heard on Wednesday before the Legislature’s Health and Human Services Committee include a proposal to prohibit smoking on Maine’s state park beaches and another to routinely include a patient’s HIV status as part of medical information exchanged between health care providers.

Wack: 1999 incident may affect some L/A voters in Senate race

Blogger Kevin Wack points out one reason why a handful of voters might have a grudge against Senate candidate and U.S. Rep. Tom Allen (D-Portland).

Wack covered politics for the Portland Press Herald up until several months ago, and left when they offered voluntary buyouts as a means of cutting staff. Since then he has started a blog following Maine’s U.S. Senate race between Allen and incumbent Sen. Susan Collins (R-Bangor).
