Charter schools: follow the money

"A system of general instruction, which shall reach every description of our citizens from the richest to the poorest, as it was the earliest, so will it be the latest of all the public concerns in which I shall permit myself to take an interest." -- Thomas Jefferson to Joseph C. Cabell, 1818.

The role played by government in the education of its citizens is one of the hallmarks of the United States. An ignorant populace cannot govern itself, and the Founding Fathers understood this, and so made public education of utmost importance.

For over 230 years, it has been the duty of all Americans to pay for this educational system, typically done through property taxes.

Good morning.

This might be optimistic, but the Hill has this analysis that the Pelosi CIA flap may lead to a truth commission on torture:

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's fight with the CIA has put her in one of the toughest spots she's been in since she became speaker.

But it may also have advanced her goal of creating a "truth commission" to investigate the Bush administration's interrogation techniques and whether they amounted to illegal torture.

If nothing else, Pelosi's hard-to-prove assertion that the CIA lied to her in a briefing has renewed interest among Republicans and Democrats in what the Bush administration was doing with detainees six years ago and what it told Congress and other officials.

Gift for yourself or someone you know: Float-Rope Doormats

As you may know, new Federal fishing rules have banned the use of floating line by commercial fisherman, as it can entangle right whales and other marine life. Sinking line must now be used.

That left a certain amount of floating line on hand, and the Maine Float-Rope Company has found a use for it: brightly colored doormats.

My wife brought home a couple of these doormats home, and one now graces our side door. They come in two sizes, and you can order them directly from the company or at a local store near you.

More Allen's Talk

At the risk of getting too meta, Michele over at Strange Maine has a post on Allen's that sees my, uh, scholarship on Maine's best-selling drink and raises me a couple other sources, including this humorous nugget from an otherwise sober WaPo article:

At Raena's Pub in the northern city of Bangor,
bartender Carrie Smith said she can easily spot the brandy drinkers.
"Bleached-blonde, teased hair. . . They always play the 'Redneck Woman'
song" on the jukebox, she said, describing the typical drinker who orders a
"sombrero," or Allen's mixed with milk. Smith said she once saw a woman dump her
cocktail on the head of a beer-drinking man who referred to the drink by its
nickname, "fat ass in a glass.

In South Carolina, gay teens deserve date-abuse

What a difference several hundred miles makes.

In Maine, we argue about whether same-sex couples should be allowed to marry or form civil unions, but in South Carolina, well, read for yourself:

South Carolina lawmakers want schools to prevent violence between teenagers who date, but made sure to exclude any references to abuse among gay and lesbian students.

Representatives in the conservative state voted overwhelmingly Thursday to bar any mention of gay or lesbian relationships in a new program aimed at curbing teen dating violence among middle and high school students. The move was pushed by lawmakers who said they don't want schools teaching about gay relationships and said they doubt those partnerships have high levels of abuse.

Flaherty Introduces Bill To Protect Maine Consumers

Buried within the fine print of many consumer contracts for credit cards, home-building contracts and car purchases are clauses that stack the deck against ordinary Americans and force consumers to give up their rights before a dispute even occurs.  This is called "pre-dispute Mandatory Binding Arbitration."

Rep. Sean Flaherty (D-Scarborough) knows all too well the dangers that Mandatory Binding Arbitration Clauses pose to consumers.  In 2007, Flaherty, worked in Washington, DC to support federal legislation that would ban the use of such clauses in contracts nationwide.
"I was part of my job to research cases and prepare people who had been victimized by these clauses to testify before Congress," Flaherty said, "I met some incredible people who signed contracts for a new home, a new family car, or even employment without even realizing that if a problem was to arise, they would have no recourse whatsoever.

May Day health care reform events

This May Day hundreds of Mainers will visit Senators Snowe and Collins' offices in Biddeford, Portland, Auburn, Lewiston, Augusta, Bangor, and Presque Isle to highlight the urgent need for federal reform that creates access to quality, affordable health care for all. A "Health Care Caravan" of twenty-five activists will travel to each office, meeting up with many more local residents in each city. At each office, community members will present the Senators with a lighthouse, share a personal story related to the health care crisis, and request that the Senator be a "guiding light" out of the health care crisis by supporting a public health insurance plan at the national level for everyone in America.

Equal Marriage Passes Maine's Senate

The equal marriage bill has passed the Senate on a 20-15 vote. The vote was along party lines, except for Republican Chris Rector voting in favor and Democrat Troy Jackson voting against the bill.

This is a major hurdle cleared for equal marriage. L.D. 1020 will now have one more procedural vote in the Senate and then go to the House, where there is a much larger pro-equality majority and then to the Governor's desk for his signature.

If Governor Baldacci chooses not to veto the bill, opponents will have 90 days after the adjournment of the legislature to gather to gather 55,087 signatures in order to prevent the bill from becoming law and to force a "people's veto" referendum.
