GOP convention speeches: Susan Collins part 1

A group of firefighters met U.S. Sen. Susan Collins outside the Civic Center. The all wore shirts, “Firefighters for Susan Collins”.

During her speech, Collins applauded party unity and urged support for John McCain. Her remarks were met with waving signs, cheers and noisemakers.

GOP convention speeches: Susan Collins part 2

Sen. Susan Collins used her convention speech to differentiate herself from potential opponent U.S. Rep. Tom Allen. She talked about her record and criticized him for voting against a number of bills, including warrantless wiretapping of overseas communication and to condemn a MoveOn.org ad. She criticized him for leaving the Armed Services Committee to join the Energy Committee.

GOP Convention speeches: Olympia Snowe

On Day 2 of the Maine GOP Convention U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe applauded a number of people and groups who she said will help make this year a banner year for Republicans.

There was a little mishap getting to the convention, however. She was coming in on a plane from Aroostook County, where she surveyed the flood damage. She was reading and not paying attention, and the pilot forgot she was going to Augusta and they ended up in Portland – something was wrong, she said, when she saw the ocean. The pilot turned around and took her back.

Dean Scontras’ Reagan moment

GOP convention officials were facing tight time constraints after elections for national committeeman and committeewoman took far longer than expected on Friday. They decided to cut speeches by congressional candidates back by a couple of minutes.

This did not sit well with a lot of people. The candidates were then allowed to speak again at the district caucuses the following day.
