New U.S. attorney mulled

BANGOR, Maine — U.S. Reps. Mike Michaud and Chellie Pingree have announced the formation of a five-member committee that will assist and advise them on their recommendation to President Obama on the appointment of the next U.S. attorney in Maine.

Michaud and Pingree are looking for the committee to complete its work by the end of March, according to a joint press release issued Friday.

The members of the advisory committee, all lawyers, are: Leigh Stephens McCarthy of Bangor; Donald Zillman, president of the University of Maine at Presque Isle; Jeff Thaler of Portland; and Virginia Davis and Walter McKee, both of Augusta.

Lawrence considering U.S. Attorney post

York County District Attorney Mark Lawrence is gunning for the U.S. Attorney job.

He said he has spoken to people close to the process, and is “definitely considering the job.”

However, he said he is also happy serving as district attorney.

Lawrence is serving his second term as district attorney, and he will be up for reelection in 2010. This year he also ran an unsuccessful primary campaign for the 1st Congressional District earlier this year.

Naval Yards Firefighters endorse Lawrence in 1st District

Just before the primary, local firefighters endorsed York County District Attorney Mark Lawrence in his bid to be the Democratic Party's candidate in the 1st Congressional District.

The International Association of Firefighters, Local F-123, which represents firefighters at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, announced their support for the candidate last Tuesday. Lawrence's father, Irving, worked at the shipyard as a welder for over 38 years.

Monday, June 2:

-Adam Cote’s campaign has emerged as a major contender. In an e-mail, the Cote campaign quotes a ‘(Chellie) Pingree staffer’: "So, the race is coming down to the wire. My take is that Adam is closing and it comes down to Adam vs. Chellie."

Convention update: 10:45 p.m.

The convention floor is clear and delegates have disbursed to the various parties – all of which started three hours late.

Before the final speaker came out, convention chair Beth Edmonds announced the final delegate tally – 15 delegates from Maine will represent Barack Obama in Denver, and nine will represent Hillary Clinton. The results of all the other votes – for national delegate slots and DNC members – will be announced tomorrow.
