Who should run for governor in 2010?

The list of those who are seriously considering a run for governor got one name longer this week when Maine & Co.'s Matt Jacobson said he formed an exploratory committee.

Jacobson, 48, is a Republican, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate, and his job is to bring new businesses to Maine. The press release announcing his exploratory committee -- which includes Augusta Mayor Roger Katz -- focuses heavily on the economy.

He's a totally new name to Maine politics.

On the Democratic side, former Maine Attorney General Steven Rowe has said he will run, although he has yet to make a formal announcement.

Jacobson: All Jobs, All the Time

Newly announced Republican gubernatorial candidate Matt Jacobson has done a good job sticking to a single theme in the initial media reports on his candidacy. If the election is about the faltering economy and he can continue to define himself as the "jobs" candidate, he might have a shot. That's going to be much harder to do in a few months, however, when he actually has some opponents.

Good morning:

The Senate passed the District of Columbia House Voting Rights Act of 2009 (S. 190) yesterday, by a vote of 61 to 37 with Ted Kennedy not voting (Roll Call 73). Sens. Snowe and Collins joined with four other Republicans in voting for a bill that was amended to provided gun ownership protections and a provision about the Fairness Doctrine. Mmmmm - sausage. The Hill has this:

One controversial amendment changing D.C. law was added to the bill. In a 62-36 vote, the Senate approved an amendment from Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) that does away with D.C.'s registration requirements for most guns.

Business group CEO mulls Maine gubernatorial bid

PORTLAND, Maine — Matt Jacobson, president and chief executive officer of Maine & Co., is considering a bid for governor next year as a Republican.

The 48-year-old former railroad executive said his efforts to bring jobs to Maine prompted his decision to form an exploratory committee as the first step toward a run for the Blaine House. Maine & Co. is devoted to economic development in the state.

Jacobson, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate and former Air Force pilot, said his goal is to create an economic climate in Maine that enables it to compete with other states and in the global economy.

Jacobson, who lives in Cumberland, would be making his first bid for elective office.

Republican Announces for Governor

Matt Jacobson, the President of Maine & Co., a non-profit that helps businesses locate in Maine, has announced that he's launching a bid for the Republican gubernatorial nomination in 2010.

Jacobson was on some lists of possible contenders, but missing from others.

Jacobson's press release announcing his candidacy presages a single-issue campaign based on job creation, which could be a powerful message in tough economic times. A major weakness may be that he has never held an elected position or run for office before in his life.

Primary campaigns in Maine demand solid skills in retail politics and a strong base of support. Jacobson hasn't yet demonstrated that he possesses either.
