McCain: ‘I will compete and win in the State of Maine’

Presidential nominee John McCain said Monday that he plans to be competitive in Maine.

McCain spent the day in the state. After attending three fundraisers in Kennebunkport, he made a public appearance at the Maine Military Museum.

In his 15-minute speech, he commended all the veterans in the crowd and spoke about gaining energy independence and having strong national security. He differentiated himself from his opponent, Barack Obama, on both respects.

After being introduced by U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, McCain spoke for about 15 minutes about national security and his time both in the military and in a Vietnam prison camp.

My video is shaky but I will have what I can salvage up soon.

While McCain was speaking, there were several small groups protesting outside, including members from the Maine Campaign for Free Trade, Planned Parenthood and labor groups.

Now here’s a rarity in the world of major political events (at least, the bulk of the ones this reporter has been to).

It was just announced that John McCain will be a half hour early, so likely the schedule will be bumped up.
