Good morning.

You can start your day - and hence your week - with this bracer by Paul Krugman:

As I read it, this dismissal - together with the continuing failure to announce any broad plans for bank restructuring - means that the White House has decided to muddle through on the financial front, relying on economic recovery to rescue the banks rather than the other way around. And with the stimulus plan too small to deliver an economic recovery ... well, you get the picture.

Sooner or later the administration will realize that more must be done. But when it comes back for more money, will Congress go along?

Republicans are now firmly committed to the view that we should do nothing to respond to the economic crisis, except cut taxes - which they always want to do regardless of circumstances.

Encouraged and energized after meeting with OBAMA.

JDuson, Portland Mayor, February 21, 2009

Last week, I had the opportunity to be part of a delegation from the US Conference of Mayors who met with President Obama and key members of his cabinet to discuss the recently passed American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).  Some 90 Mayors from communities across the country were invited by the USCoM to represent the common interests of cities in accessing and putting to immediate work; stimulus package resources to fuel local economies, generate local jobs and shore up local families in crisis.

Following a lack luster continental breakfast in an East Wing Foyer - - we moved into a lovely conference room half filled with rows of chairs for the USCoM delegation facing a stage set for six.

WSJ, Post highlight CollinsÂ’ efforts on stimulus

The Wall Street Journal and Washington Post highlighted Sen. Susan Collins' efforts to work on a stimulus package with President Barack Obama in coverage published today.

This is from an editorial in the Washington Post:

"Sen. Susan Collins of Maine is one of the moderate Republicans whose support the president must win if he is to garner the 60 Senate votes needed to pass a stimulus package. She and Democrat Ben Nelson of Nebraska are working on a plan that would carry a lower nominal price tag than the current bill -- perhaps $200 billion lower -- but which would focus on aid to states, "shovel-ready" infrastructure projects, food stamp increases and other items calculated to boost business and consumer spending quickly.
