National Popular Vote hearing in Augusta

Yesterday there was a hearing in the Legal and Veterans Affairs Committee of the Maine legislature on LD 56 - An Act to Join the Interstate Compact on the National Popular Vote.

While some people feel that this would make Maine less of a factor in the presidential election, I would note several factors...

The current system has not been helpful to Maine's interests or those of any low population state other than New Hampshire. How many visits did we get from Presidential candidates during the general election period last year? Compare that to how many there were to Nevada - a swing state.

NPV initiative dead

Maine will not be participating in the National Popular Vote interstate compact.

The Senate had passed the bill by one vote last week. The initiative, sponsored by Sen. John Martin, D-Eagle Lake, sought to commit Maine’s four electorates to the winner of the national popular vote in presidential elections -- but only when enough states elected to participate to make up a majority of the Electoral College.

NPV vote redo expected Thursday

Update: The issue was tabled Thursday.

The National Popular Vote bill is expected to come up for a second debate and vote Thursday in the Maine Senate.

The issue first came up in the Maine Senate Monday. With Sen. David Hastings III, R-Fryeburg, absent, they voted 17 to 17. On Tuesday, Hastings said he is against the bill so, providing everyone is there and votes the same, it won’t pass.

Growing NPV movement stalls in Maine Senate

The Maine Senate could not either pass or not pass a bill Monday that would allow the state to participate in the National Popular Vote interstate compact.

The compact would bind Maine’s four electorates to the national popular vote in presidential elections. The bill would only take effect if states with enough delegates – 270 -- to form a majority vote for president agree to it.
