Casino push failing by 7 points with 77 percent reporting

An effort to allow a casino in Oxford County is losing by 40,000 votes with 77 percent of precincts reporting, according to preliminary results compiled by the Bangor Daily News.

Dennis Bailey, head of the opposition group CasinosNO!, is considering this a victory. He hopes this will be the definitive vote on casinos in the state. “Maine people made up their mind five years ago. Las Vegas didn’t get the memo,” he said.

Casino group promises to fix flawed bill, Bailey warns against voting on ‘a question mark’

FARMINGTON -- The group advocating for a casino in Oxford County has promised to address problematic provisions in the referendum language, including provisions that lower the gambling age, allow 18-year-olds to work in the casino and puts the president on a number of Maine boards and commissions.

A new ad promoting the proposed Oxford County casino features a transcript of Dennis Bailey, who leads the opposing group CasinosNO!, claiming he used scare tactics to defeat the 2003 Sanford racino referendum campaign.

Vote Yes on 2 for Maine put six times more money into its campaign in the last two weeks of the 3rd quarter than opponents CasinosNO! received all year.

The two groups are on either side of Question 2, which proposes a casino in Oxford County.

Referendum leaders to debate on WGAN

WGAN radio will host debates on both referendum questions.

From 7 to 8 a.m. Oct. 16, representatives (to be determined) from Yes on 1 and No on 1 will debate the merits of a repeal of the recently passed beverage tax.

From 7 to 8 a.m. Oct. 30, Dennis Bailey of CasinosNO! and Pat LaMarche of Vote Yes on 2 for Maine will debate the proposal to allow a casino in Oxford County.

LaMarche: Green primary possible in 2010

Pat LaMarche, a former Green Party gubernatorial candidate, said she will not run again in 2010.

LaMarche said several greens are looking at running, and a primary might be likely. She would not give names.

The Green Party must run someone for governor each cycle to maintain their status as an official party in the state.

Legislators: Backer was necessary for casino project to move forward

Two Oxford County legislators said that having an experienced backer for the Oxford County Casino was a necessity for the project to move forward.

The Olympia Group, a Las-Vegas company that manages several major casinos, announced its purchase of Evergreen Mountain Enterprises this morning.
