Senate Republicans replace leadership

AUGUSTA -- In an unexpected move, the Senate Republicans replaced their leaders this afternoon.

Sen. Kevin Raye (R-Perry) defeated current Republican leader Carol Weston (R-Montville).

After several were nominated, Sen. Jon Courtney (R-Sanford) was elected assistant leader unopposed.

The Republican caucus was held off-site and was closed to the press. Nobody asked would reveal what the vote was.

GOP leaders demand answers over lost money

State Senate Republicans are demanding answers as to how the state lost nearly $20 million with an investment gone bad. They are asking State Treasurer David Lemoine to appear before the Legislative Council as soon as possible.

However, Democratic leaders have said that it is unnecessary for him to appear before the council, and the matter will be handled within the Appropriations Committee Dec. 12 and 13.

Republicans hope to take reigns of state Senate in ‘08

Republicans haven't had control of the state Senate for ten years, and party leaders say it's time to make a run for it.

Senate Majority Leader Elizabeth Mitchell, D-Vassalboro, however, doesn't see this as so likely.
