Live blog: House speaker nominated

11:05 a.m.: House Democrats have unanimously nominated Hannah Pingree (D-North Haven) as Speaker of the House. The nomination will go before the full chamber Dec. 3.

She was nominated by Reps. Robert Eaton (D-Sullivan) and Lisa Miller (D-Somerville).

Eaton cited the tough times ahead for this session.

Step Up for Kids rally at the State House

AUGUSTA -- A crowd of about 100 gathered on the State House steps this morning to urge voters to make children’s issues a priority in this election cycle.

The event was part of the national “Step Up for Kids” day. Gov. John Baldacci has issued a proclamation recognizing the day.

Issues at hand are access to pre-kindergarten education, preventing abuse and neglect, and addressing poverty.
