Maine DHHS to get $19.5M for water infrastructure projects

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Maine’s Department of Health and Human Services will receive $19.5 million under the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Water State Revolving Fund Program.

Sen. Olympia Snowe announced the funding this week as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Snowe and fellow Republican Sen. Susan Collins were two of only three GOP senators who issued the passage of the bill.

Snowe emphasized the need for water infrastructure in a letter to the Senate Appropriations Committee on Dec. 22 stating that the projects could “quickly return benefits to local communities and their residents, employ workers in the ailing construction industry, help keep property taxes down, and make positive long-term in-vestments for communities’ continued growth and sustainability.

Hospitals to receive $373.7M from state

AUGUSTA, Maine — Jobs will be saved, others created and Maine hospitals will be able to expand some facilities as a result of the state sending the first of two payments that will total $373.7 million for past-due bills owed them by the state.

Gov. John Baldacci signed a financial order Tuesday in the Hall of Flags at the State House to applause from lawmakers and hospital officials that will make $163 million in state and federal funds available within weeks to hospitals as a result of the stimulus package.

“This is a good day,” he said in an interview. “This fulfills a promise made to the hospitals to pay them what is owed and help save jobs and create jobs.

The New Republic has noticed Snowe and Collins taking on Rush Limbaugh in the Press Herald.

At the moment, it seems like they're the only ones in the Republican Party willing to do so.

Good morning.

You can start your day - and hence your week - with this bracer by Paul Krugman:

As I read it, this dismissal - together with the continuing failure to announce any broad plans for bank restructuring - means that the White House has decided to muddle through on the financial front, relying on economic recovery to rescue the banks rather than the other way around. And with the stimulus plan too small to deliver an economic recovery ... well, you get the picture.

Sooner or later the administration will realize that more must be done. But when it comes back for more money, will Congress go along?

Republicans are now firmly committed to the view that we should do nothing to respond to the economic crisis, except cut taxes - which they always want to do regardless of circumstances.

Snowe/Collins vote to give DC a seat

Maine Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins voted last week to give Washington D.C. a representative in the U.S. House.

Snowe and Collins were two of only six Republicans to support the measure. The New York Times reports that a similar bill is certain to pass the House and that President Barack Obama has indicated he will sign it.

However, the measure will end up in court as part of a Constitutional battle over whether DC can be granted a representative even though it is not a state.

The Senate version also gave Utah another seat, which would increase the size of the House from 435 to 437.

Did Snowe and Collins do the right thing?

Maine delegation lauds president’s ambitious goals

WASHINGTON — During a speech in which Republican senators often remained seated while Democrats applauded, Maine Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe stood up when President Obama referred to the passage of a $787 billion stimulus package. They and Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Penn., were the only GOP senators to vote for the bill when it passed the Senate.

After the president’s speech Tuesday night, Snowe released a statement lauding Obama’s “aggressive and ambitious agenda,” saying bipartisan cooperation will prove even more important now given the challenges facing the nation.

Snowe singled out Obama’s plan to reform the American health care system, the details of which the president said he would outline as soon as next week, as a good idea to address a “mounting crisis” affecting more than 47 million uninsured Americans.

Bailey: Maine Right Wing is "Flaccid"

Political veteran Dennis Bailey thinks that Maine's media is missing an important point in the discussion of Snowe and Collins' bipartisanship.

"the reason that Snowe and Collins can support the stimulus bill while their Republican colleagues can’t is because most members of Congress face strong, right-wing opposition back in their districts and could face serious opponents for their jobs if they backed the president. Re-election, after all, is the one thing that really gets the attention of a member of Congress.

On the other hand, Maine’s right wing-nut GOP faction is no threat at all to Snowe and Collins. It’s a noisy but flaccid group who have no influence in statewide elections. There are plenty GOP senators and congressman who are jealous of Snowe’s and Collins’ invulnerability and would have otherwise supported the stimulus."
