NEWS FEED: Turn Maine Blue

Open Thread

Good morning.

Two stories in this morning's MST are of special interest, the first on how the stimulus package may help to bring broadband internet access to areas of Maine that do not have it:

The stimulus bill would divide broadband funding between two federal agencies -- $4.7 billion for the National Telecommunication and Information Administration at the Department of Commerce, and $2.5 billion for the Rural Utilities Service program in the Department of Agriculture.

Phillip Lindley, executive director of ConnectME, said it's likely the agriculture program will loan or grant money mostly to private companies, while public groups like ConnectME will seek Commerce Department funding.

Collins to sit national convention out

It will be like a big class reunion. All the Republican politicians, leaders and activists from around the country will gather in St. Paul, Minnesota in one month to officially nominate John McCain.

Collins’ staff responds to Allen’s allegations

Tom Allen is attacking Sen. Susan Collins for allowing war-profiteering when she blocked a request by Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., to investigate Halliburton.

Staff for Susan Collins said today that the efforts were a politically charged one-man crusade, and the committee had more important issues to deal with. Lautenberg made his requests between 2003 and 2006, when Collins was chairwoman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

Abbott Unable to Break Free for First CD Race

It's official. The one guy that apparently 75% of the Republicans were hoping would run for the Congressional seat being vacated by Tom Allen,  has officially said no.  Steve Abbott, the Chief of Staff and architect of Senator Collins election and reelection campaigns -- will be staying on board with Collins for the 2008 election cycle.

Mr. Abbott was kind enough to send along the recording of the call, where he made his official announcement.
