Bill retools write-in candidate laws

AUGUSTA, Maine — Last fall, Stockton Springs resident Joseph Greenier ran as a write-in candidate for a state Senate seat on the platform that every vote should count.

But more than four months later, Greenier still isn’t sure how many votes he truly received in his unsuccessful bid for the State House. That’s because clerks in several towns never tallied or reported the ballots cast for write-in candidates.

“As a write-in candidate, I ran because they have to change for the positive,” Greenier said Friday in support of a bill to retool Maine’s write-in candidacy laws.

Write-in candidates for state or national offices already are required to declare their candidacy with the Secretary of State’s Office within three business days of an election.

Lawmakers looking to prevent stimulus waste

WASHINGTON — Senators grilled federal auditors Thursday on ways to prevent waste and fraud as the government doles out the first portions of a $787 billion economic stimulus package.

The Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs is charged with the task of overseeing the billions of stimulus dollars aimed at saving and creating jobs and boosting consumer spending. Committee members asked federal inspectors how they would monitor the money, at least $58 billion of which already has been allocated to specific programs, according to the Office of Management and Budget.

Lawmakers said it could be difficult balancing efficiency with the need to spend the stimulus funds quickly, which most economists say is necessary if the money is to effectively boost the economy.

A Costly Loss

This guy ran the numbers for the 2008 US Senate elections across the country and calculated the amount spent by each candidate per vote earned.

The results show that Tom Allen spent $21 for every vote he received in November, making his run the most costly unsuccessful major-party challenge to an incumbent anywhere in the country, per vote. Allen's votes were cheaper only compared to the candidates in tight races in Alaska and New Hampshire and incumbent Max Baucus' campaign in Montana.

Susan Collins spent more money, but also won a lot more votes, resulting in an expenditure of $17 per vote.

Those numbers pale in comparison to the third party per-vote expenditures.
