Bill retools write-in candidate laws

AUGUSTA, Maine — Last fall, Stockton Springs resident Joseph Greenier ran as a write-in candidate for a state Senate seat on the platform that every vote should count.

But more than four months later, Greenier still isn’t sure how many votes he truly received in his unsuccessful bid for the State House. That’s because clerks in several towns never tallied or reported the ballots cast for write-in candidates.

“As a write-in candidate, I ran because they have to change for the positive,” Greenier said Friday in support of a bill to retool Maine’s write-in candidacy laws.

Write-in candidates for state or national offices already are required to declare their candidacy with the Secretary of State’s Office within three business days of an election.

Good morning.

The PPH has this story about earmarks that the Senate has include in the omnibus spending bill, and how much of it will be coming to Maine:

The $410 billion spending bill debated by the U.S. Senate on Wednesday includes about $21 million for some 45 projects in Maine, ranging from potato research to buying land for conservation.

I'm not opposed to such spending as a rule, only as to how the funding is to actually be used. But I point to this article for two reasons: first, the online comments will be really fun to read, and second - $21 million is only 5 thousands of a percent of the total bill.

CNN, NBC call Senate race for Collins

CNN and NBC have both projected that Sen. Susan Collins will win the U.S. Senate race. She was challenged this year by U.S. Rep. Tom Allen.

Allen has not yet arrived at his party at the Wyndham Hotel in South Portland. Some polls are still open.

“We think that’s very premature,” said spokeswoman Carol Andrews. “I don’t know of any reputable exit polling being done in the state. I know we won the early vote by 10 points, and people are still voting in Portland.”
