Regardless of risk, Del. Montgomery stands firmly against slots

ROCKVILLE -- Del. Karen Montgomery admits that her stance on November's slots referendum could impact her 2010 re-election bid, but she remains passionately against the proposal.

"It does happen that a fair amount of my district agrees with me," Montgomery told PolitickerMD.com. "I have never hedged on where I stand on issues."

Voters will decide on November's ballot if the state constitution should be amended to allow no more than 15,000 slot machine installations at five different locations across the state. Montgomery calls the bill "ill thought out."

She says that it will take approximately two years before the government gets any money back and that about 30 percent of earnings will go out of state.

Montgomery also criticized the bill for having millions of dollars built into it to help people with gambling addiction

"In my recent memory and the memory of my aids this is the only bill that ever has built into it the fact that there is remedy for the circumstances it causes," she said. "That is a several million dollar amount of money included in the bill to treat those who are suffering from gambling addiction..."

The fight over November's slots referendum has become a heated issue in the state.

While proponents argue the slots will provide necessary funding for the state's education infrastructure, opponents believe the revenue projections are overly optimistic, and the problems associated with gambling far outweigh the benefits.
