Chair baby chair? Steele hasn't mentioned it says spokeswoman

Recent rumors suggest former Lt. Gov. Michael Steele (R-Prince George's County)  -- the current chair of GOPAC -- may have his sights on the Republican National Committee's chairmanship, but a spokeswoman for Steele says the rumors are coming from the mouths of others, not Steele himself.

"He hasn't talked about it," Belinda Cook, GOPAC's special assistant to the chairman, told PolitickerMD.com. Cook says Steele has been focusing on getting John McCain elected and hasn't mentioned the idea.

Steele has been an active surrogate for John McCain throughout the election. His name was even kicked around as a potential running mate for McCain, before Gov. Sarah Palin (R-Alaska) landed the No. 2 spot on the ticket. At one point, Steele was even rumored to be playing the role of Barack Obama during McCain's debate prep, but Cook called the reports untrue.

Steele, however, has publicly said a run for governor is a possibility, but facts on the ground would affect the decision.

Steele served as then-Gov. Bob Ehrlich's second-in-command from 2002 to 2006 and currently serves as the chair of GOPAC. He made an unsuccessful bid for the U.S. Senate in 2006 against now-U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Baltimore).
