Harris may need lawyer after latest attack

Republican Andy Harris's campaign says Democrat Frank Kratovil's relationships with some trial attorneys are a conflict of interest, but at least two of those attorney's are denying the allegations and one is threatening legal action in response.

Kratovil, the Queen Anne's County state's Attorney, and Harris, a state Senator from Cockeysville are currently engaged in a heated battle for Maryland's 1st Congressional District seat. The Harris campaign alleges that Kratovil dropped felony charges against one of attorney Peter O'Neill's clients, Lisa Birchfield, only after O'Neill held a fundraiser and donated $1,750 to Kratovil.

But O'Neill says Kratovil had "zero" involvement in the case and called the claims an "outright lie."

"He had no involvement in it. None," O'Neill told PolitickerMD.com. In addition, O'Neill says the case is still pending and the reason there were no felony charges is because there simply wasn't enough evidence.

"Mr. Kratovil and I never discussed that case," O'Neill said. But Harris's campaign manager, Chris Meekins, called the relationship "just plain wrong."

"At the very least this is a conflict of interests. At the very worst it is justice for sale," Meekins told PolitickerMD.com.

O'Neill insists the attacks are "totally baseless." "And whoever made that accusation better get a good lawyer," O'Neill said.

Also on the Harris campaign's hit list was attorney Jane Canter. The Harris campaign claims four drug charges were dropped for one of her clients, Eric Snyder, only after she donated $2,000 to the Kratovil campaign. Like O'Neill, she says Kratovil had no involvement in her case.

"Frank didn't have anything to do with it at all as far as I know," Canter told PolitickerMD.com.

Harris's attacks come just five days before Election Day and at a time when most observers are calling the race a dead heat.

O'Neill says Harris's accusations are just his "desperate attempt" to smear Kratovil because he's behind in the polls.

Meekins says the Harris campaign made the accusations originally in late September, but the campaign released detailed information only after careful fact-checking.

Kevin Lawlor, Kratovil's press secretary, fully agreed with O'Neill's assessment.

"This is Harris' Hail Mary pass and his Quarterback has a very weak arm," Lawlor wrote in an email to PolitickerMD.com.
